September 22. Hugh Brown, chauffeur, attempted to shoot Mrs Frances Jefferson, licensee of the Rifle Brigade Hotel. He missed his mark, and a barmaid named .Miss Foley rushed to the landlady's assistance. Brown, mistaking her for Jefferson, fired, killing the girl. He then committed suicide. Brown is a married man, and it is believed was infatuated by Mrs Jefferson. Yesterday he enlisted in the Expeditionary Force as a motor transport driver.
