THE DEFENCE OF POLA.
London, September 16
The Germans have provided Pola (c the Adriatic) with heavy Howitzers and many modern guns, and have also defended it. with live wires on land and floating mines at sea. ' The defenders number 150,000. The Austrian fleet leaves Pola daily, but remains under cover of the forts. Yalona telegrams state that famine, malaria, and small-pox are raging, particularly amohg the refugees from the villages. The dead are transported on the backs of donkeys without covering, and are buried in shallow graves, thus increasing the danger of infection.
THE RUSSIAN NUMBERS.
London, September 16
The Austrian Press explain that their defeat was due to a Russian numerical superiority of a quarter of a million.
