MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1914. THE PROGRESS OF THE WAR.
Even those timid people who have tremblingly awaited with doubt the outcome of the conflict with Germany will be soothed on reading the latest news from the scene of operations. It has indeed been well said that Germany to-day stands as die world's most-hated nation, and that every civilised people i>s praying for her downfall and the obliteration of the perverse ambitions which led her to plunge the world in strife. Narrowed down to a fine point the main responsibility for the present conflict must lie with the perverted Kaiser himself, for he it is who is responsible for Germany's foreign policy more than anyone else in the whole country. Those of his Ministers who have supported him in his mad plunge towards the wrecking of his country, must by this time have realised what ! a gigantic failure the whole thing has been. When the peace-loving common people of Germany can no longer be fooled, and when it has sunk into their sober minds that official information handed out by the Kaiser himself is quite untrue and that the many vaunted victories that have been published in Berlin are really great defeats of the Gorman ' arms, they will realise that a change is needed, and that they will no longer be "the docile sheep," as Mr Winston Churchill lias said, "who serve the precious ambitions of the despotic kings of Germany, who have been the terror and bully of Europe, the menace of every small State, and a perpetual source of unrest." The tide has turned and "The Day," so long awaited by boastful Prussians has come: but how different indeed to William's high hopes it has proved !
