EXPERIENCE OF THE STEAMER MESSINA. GERMAN FLEET IN TOUCH. (Received 11.30 a.m.) Sydney, September 8. The steamer Messina, from Nauru, reports that the island was under martial law a week before she left. The Germans attempted to capture the steamer and detained the captain for six hours, but eventually liberated bin. and be rejoined the steamer at Ocean Island, the chief officer having managed to get the steamer away. Nothing was seen of a German squadron. The island has a powerful wireless, j ,io fleet is undoubtedly in touch, as in edible exaggerations of German victories are posted. The Pronto, which was chartered to patrol the islands, conveyed the news that three German warships were cruising in tli© region of Ponape (Eastern Carolines), the Germans anticipating their arrival to take them off.
