The ■United" Friendly Societies’ weekly social will be held in the Foresters’ Hull this evening, the usual pleasant evening being promised. '('he Stratford Horticultural Spring Show, which is to be held at the Town Hall on Thursday, 17th iust., promises to be a, big .success. The proceeds are to bo iii the Patriotic Fund.

A meeting of members and intending members of the newly-formed National Defence Corps will be hold in the Council Chambers to-morrow evening, at 7.80 o’clock. The provisional committee will meet at 7 in the Mayor’s room.

To-morrow evening a social and dance will bo held in Mr Sangster’s barn, L'eaconsfield Road, the whole of the proceeds being devoted to the War Fund. Good trophies have been donated for guessing and other competitions, and old and young should spend a pleasant time.

The Department of Agriculture, Industries and Commerce, have notified the executive of the A. and P. Association that they are prepared to supply seeds and manures free of charge to farmers in the district for experimental purposes. Any information required may be had on application to the secretary of the A. and P. Association, Mr A. J. Hill.

Mr H. Williamson, of the staff of Mcßain and Childs, Stratford, was out riding yesterday morning, when by some means unknown to his companions, who were riding some distance in the rear, he was thrown heavily on his head. He was removed in an unconscious condition to the hospital. Inquiry tiiis morning showed that his condition was somewhat improved, though he was still unconscious.

On Saturday afternoon the horse attached to Mr H. W. Kerr’s bread delivery cart bolted and covered a good deal of ground before being pulled up. While tlie driver was absent the horse set out from Swansea Road and traversed Cloton Road, Juliet Street, Regan Street, Broadway and Celia Street, being brought to a standstill in the vicinity of Swansea Road. Despite its rough journey the cart was not materially damaged.

Reference to the automatic alarm device for level-crossings is made by Mr R. H. Hiley (General Manager of Railways) in bis annual report. “The experiments that have been made with the level-crossing automatic alarm in■;talled at Levin having proved satisfactory,” he says, “material has been ordered for three hundred machines, which it is proposed to install at busy crossings and at other crossings where the view of the railway line is restricted. It will take three years to complete the installation, which it is proposed to undertake at the rate of 100 machines per annum. The expenditure involved will ho approximately £22,500.”
