Vienna papers say that neither victory nor defeat has any effect on the Russian infantryman, who slowly but surely makes trenches, and if driven back builds a new defence.' The Austrian will have to buy every inch of ground with their blood.
QUIETENING THE CALICIAN
CONSCIENCE.

Amongst the thousands of Austrian prisoners captured by the Russians are many Galicians, who declare that it would have been a betrayal of Austria for them not to have fought. "Nevertheless," they say, "We cannot fight against our natures. To be taken prisoners is the most agreeable way of quietening our consciences."
