GERMANS BURN A TOWN TO THE GROUND,

Danzig.—Copital of province of the same name, is situated on the left bank of the western branch of the river Vistula, about four miles from the mouth. The town is strongly fortified. It is one of the chief commercial cities of Europe, the exports of grain and timber being immense. The town has a stirring history. In 1793 it was occupied by the Prussians, and in 1807 surrendered; to the French after a loiig siege. After Bonaparte’s retreat from Russia the French surrendered it after a long defence.
