SOUTHLAND (0) At New Plymouth yesterday afternoon the Taranaki team for the fifth time this season played in defence of the Ranfurly Shield, beating Southland by six points to nil. The South, erners’ team had been badly cut about by the war, ten of the fifteen originally chosen to play having volunteered for the front. However, in the forwards they made an excellent showing, the whole of the van guar a being hard workers. The homo team gave a very ragged performance, and in the second spell quite a lot of chances to score were missed. Don Cameron donned the jersey for the province once again and gave a good account of himself. The home forwards were not up to the usual mark.
Taranaki’s first score was registered well towards the end of the first spell, Roberts scoring after some nice side-stepping, following on an opening by Brown. The home team’s second score was a try by Don Cameron well on in the second spell. The ball went from Roberts, to Stohr, to Cameron, who streaked for the line and scored after side-stepping the opposing full-back. Mr George Nicholson, of Auckland, controlled the game. At New Plymouth yesterday the local High School defeated the Palmerston High School by 33 to 5.
