BERNARD’S PICTURES. The new series of pictures for this evening includes “Dauphiny,’,’ a famous scenic film of southern France. “The latest English Gazette,” “Hie Canine Hero” (drama), “The Ring” (Majestic drama), “The Schemers” (Vita, comedy), “Taming Terrible Ted” (Lubin comic). The star feature, “Forest Dwellers” deals with hidden treasure and all those exciting incidents in the life of men on strike and gypsies. Eventually there is the dramatic recognition of the villian who had stolen the papers and the treasure the coming into' her own of the downtrodden heiress, and the chance for repentance hy the villian in the dungeon. Wednesday next, September 2nd, Wells-Carpentier fight. A great battle of fisticuffs between the groat pugilists of England and France. THE SMART SET. When it is announced that the Smart Sot are again to* visit New Zealand, commencing at the Town Hall on Wednesday next, 2nd September, theatregoers will doubtless realise that they are in for a good time, both from a comedy point of view and a musical, Mr Edward Branscombe has taken over this combination, and added to its repertoire and its personnel, and is directing the tour. That excellent comedian and entertainer, Mr Walter George, who was such a favorite in the tour last year, is with the present combination, as is Miss Georgia Martin, the dainty, vivacious, and clever soubrette and dancer. For the rest of the company mention may be made of Mr Harry de Robeck, a comedian, whose work, it is claimed, is full of finesse, and to a large degree original, who lias met with unprecedented success in the Australian States; Miss Lalla Knight, the soprano of the company; Mr Maurice Jones, tenor; Miss Gwennyth Evans, contralto,; Mr Ernest Parkes, baritone; Mr Gavin Wood, basso comedian; and Mr Edgar Holland, solo pianist and accompanist. The novel methods adopted by this merry band of entertainers of serving their fare of musical comedy and vaudeville, must be seen to be appreciated. When it is mentioned that the Smart Set have been appearing continuously for very many years, in England, America, the East, and Australasia, and are still as popular as when they made their first great name in England, it will he understood what a talented organisation is about to visit Stratford. The box plan will open at Grubb’s, to-morrow, where seats may be reserved without extra charges. Popular prices are announced—3s, 2s, Is.
