GARDEN PARTY IN AID OF THE PATRIOTIC FUND.

The garden party held in Mr Truelove's (Janiens at Ngaere on Tuesday! afternoon was attended by about 300 people, including many from Eltham and Stratford. The management was in the hands of a committee of ladies, who worked hard under the leadership of Mrs X. Jones and Mrs A. Truelove, joint secretary and treasurer. Good business was done with guessing competitions, nail driving, bran tub, and sale of toys, lollies, rosettes, and flowers. A large cake given by Mrs T. E. Coleman brought £1 os 6d by guessing competition, and the winner, Miss Cameron, gave it hack, when it was sold for 8s 6d, making a total of £1 14s. A white Leghorn rooster, given by Captain Allen, was bought and re-sold five times for lis Id, and a drake, given by Mrs A. Walker, was sold twice for 6s. A pair of English mallard ducks, given by Mr Truelove, were not sold, the price offered being insufficient, but will be auctioned at Eltham. Musical items given were: Mr Hall (Stratford) sang "The Absent Minded Beggar," which brought the practical response, of £1 ss; Miss Weyreuter (Eltham) sang "Smiles" ; Mr J. Payne and W. Knox, banjo and mandolin duet. Mr Knox also produced sweet music on an instrument improvised from a kerosene tin. Mr E. G. Allen played accompaniments and a piano solo. Refreshments were provided by the ladies, and what was over was sold. The proceeds, including gate, were £ls, which goes to the war fund. A euchre party last week netted £4 6s 6d, and a giant patriotic concert and dance is to take place on September 3rd. The different amounts will be pooled, and will help to swell the total already given by Xgaere people in Eltham and Stratford.
