PERSONAL.

A Sydney Press Association cablegram records the death of Mr Henry Alexander, who founded Druidism in the North Island.

Mr Brittain, American Consul in Auckland, is a passenger by the Riverina, from Sydney.— V.A.

The death occurred at Manaia yesterday of Mr William Hall, who was one of the first, if not actually the first, business man in Manaia. having conducted a general storekeeping business for many years. Mr Hall leaves a widow, but no family. Colonel Davies, a New Zealander, has been gazetted a brigade-cornmand-er in the British Army (states a London cablegram). Colonel, now Briga-dier-General, Davies. was for many years a resident of Inglewood, and gained much notice in the South African war, where he commanded a colonial column.

The death of Mr Robert Noble Adams at Hamilton, Auckland, has removed a figure who at one time was very prominent in total abstinence circles in Dunedin. Mr Adams was for a good many real's in the employment of the Otago Daily Jimes Company as publisher of the Times and Witness. In recent years he was engaged as a home missionary in the North Island.

Lord Kitchener's early career gave no sign of his future distinction. After passing out of the Royal Academy, Woolwich, in 1871 he was employed in survey work in Palestine and Cyprus till 1882. He went to Egypt in 1882 when 32 years of age, and remained there till in 1898 he had achieved the conquest of the Soudan. He was therefore nearly 40 years of age before he began to show out among his fellow officers. Then the opportunities came thick and fast, and he proved capable of dealing with them all.
