At the beginning of the war the Austrian Ambassador saw the Pope and asked him to send his blessing to Austrian troops about to fight. The Pope did not reply. The Ambassador put his question three times, and the Pope replied, "I bless peace." ELECTION OF THE POPE. Rome, August 23. The Conclave begins on the 31st inst.
