The German Advance

SAD INCIDENTS OF THE MARCH.

London, August 21

Ghent telegrams describe the piteous condition of burnt and pillaged villages along the line of the German advance, and the sad spectacles of thousands of Belgians streaming to Ghent. The outer works of Antwerp were recentlv' constructed.

The Standard's Ghenc correspondent states that German cavalry entered Brussels and hoisted their flag on the Hotel do Ville. Deep gloom has settled over the population. The Belgian authorities warned the citizens not to molest them and to give no excuse for vengeance. East of Louvain the German advance overwhelmed the Belgians by weight of numbers. They came in close formation, and the losses were enormous, the Germans marching over heaps of their comrades' corpses. Near Dyle a battalion of German infantry were almost destroyed when crossing the mined field.

THE POSITION OF LIEGE.

London, August 22

The Daily. News' correspondent at Rotterdam reports that the position of Liege is critical. Shots were fired at, the troops from a house on Thursday, whereupon the Germans bombarded 20 houses, killing many of the inhabitants.

Similar shots at Tongres resulted in the destruction of the town. The Germans drove the inhabitants into Holland. All were forced to keep their arms uplifted on the two hours' march.

GERMANS NORTH OF ANTWERP.

Amsterdam, August 22. The German Lancers have appeared at Esschen, north of Antwerp. The Fourth Army Corps, which is covering the German right wing, is spread out along the Dutch frontier.

The Minister for the Interior states that a great battle in Belgium began on Saturday. Other accounts state that a light is proceeding between Namur and Charleroi. The movement of Germans westward across the Meuse beyond tho range of the Namur forts continues. Router's correspondent at Ghent reports that tho Germans are marching towards tho French border via ~rde, in East Flanders, westward of Brussels.
