In aid of the War Fund.
' A SUCCESSFUL “TEA.” A highly successful tea was given at Mrs CarberyV residence yesterday afternoon, and the War Fund will benefit to the extent of about £22. The Mayor opened proceedings, which were inost efficiently organised by Mrs F. P. Uniacke. Following are results of the numerous competition held, which proved highly amusing: Bridal cake (presented by Mr F. A. Cramer), won by Mr Fussed and Miss Kirk Wood, who each guessed the correct weight; pair of chickens (weight), 'Miss Kirkwood; doll (to guess the name), Mrs Budge; guessing weight of Mrs Carbery, Miss Faulder; guessing number of beans in a wine decanter, Mrs Stewart; guessing contents of box (egg-pow-der), Mrs Leversodge; guessing time alarm clock went off, Mrs Carbery; basket of eggs, T)r. Johnston; pot plant, Mrs Sharrock; hair brush (to (guess number of bristles), Mrs Kelle!her; number of words made from I “Kate,” Mrs Grant. In addition to the-competitions money was gathered by means of a number of “dips” of various descriptions. During the afternoon‘Mr A. L. Jones contributed songs, and Miss Fitzgerald rendered a number of piano selections. The promoters desire to express thanks •‘to Mr A. J. Hill for the loan of a piano, and to the following who made donations to help the entertainment: | Messrs H. J. Hopkins, C. K. James, jF. Edwards, W. McDonald, F. A. Cramer, R. H. Robinson and A. Mcnoy.
Mr W. A. Hewitt, Stratford inannIgor of tlie New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., has received advice that the Company lias |donated £SOO to the Patriotic .War iFund, and that they have decided on [paying all those in their employ who jhave volunteered for service half pay for six months. The Company will [also keep their positions open for jthem on their return. This donation is exclusive of amounts being subscribed by the Australian and London offices. Owing to the Inspector of Stock at New Plymouth being taken suddenly ill, Mr P. lieere, Inspector at jStratford, was yesterday transferred ■at a moment’s notice to New Piy■moutli. Mr A. F. Wilson has been placed in charge of stock matters, and ivill proceed with the purchase of artillery horses for the expeditionla ry force. He will/ attend at King’s Hayrnarket next Saturday morning for the purchase ol horses, and in the meantime can supply poslv > vendors with particulars of the type of animal required. i (Continued on page 8.)
