On the High Seas.
PROTECTING TRADE ROUTES. New York, August 12. Admiral Cradock announces that the Western Atlantic is safe for merchantmen. All hostile cruisers have been warned away by the presence of five British warships. The information reaches here through the captain of the steamer New York City, who states that Admiral Cradock asked him to notify the British Consul-General that shipping is safe. The cruiser sufforl is now cruising off the New York coast. London, August 13. The i Admiralty announced that it has despatched a number of mobilised cruisers to the South American trade routes, nearly trebling the supci ioi cruiser force already there. Twentyfour British cruisers, besides the French, are in the Atlantic, seeking fiVe • Gorinan cruisers known to be -in that Ocean, They will be hunted continually, and though some time may elapse before they are caught, they will be kept too busy to do mischief. The Admiralty’s control of the trade routes, especially in the Atlantic, is becoming stronger daily. Traders should confidently and boldly send their ships to sea, except in the North Sea, where the Germans have scattered mines indiscrimiately. NORTH OF HONGKONG. , Pekin, August 13. Shipping has resumed sailings to and from the north of Hongkong. THE GOEBEN AND BRESLAU. London, August 12. It is reported that Turkey has purchased the Ooebeu and Breslau. There is no foundation given for this in official circles, but it is regarded as probable. Constantinople, August 13. Negotiations are proceeding for the removal of the German officers and crow from the Goeben and Breslau.
