CARNIVAL QUEEN CONTEST

About forty ladies attended the “Gift Afternoon” at the Te Whare Reka rooms yesterday afternoon, and a useful and valuable lot of gifts were handed in for a bazaar to be held next Friday and Saturday in aid of the Friendly Societies’ candidate, Miss Alice Cramer (Red, White and Blue). A large number of promises of gifts were also made. Mr Van Heck (violin), and Mr Barrington (piano), played several musical selections. Afternoon tea was also dispensed.

A dance is to be held in the Parish Hall this evening in aid of the candidature of Miss Hart (Green and Gold), The football match on Victoria Park yesterday was to further the candidature of Miss Hignctt (Red and Black), and the good attendance would indicate that as a result of the match a good many votes would be bought. The Municipal Band played down to the Park and at half time rendered a couple of selections. The Blue and White supporters are not to bo daunted by bad weather, and in spite of the elements the dance at Midhirst last evening was well attended. All were out to enjoy themselves, and this they did thoroughly. Draughts players are reminded of “Prof. Blooanwhite’s” exhibition tomorrow afternoon and evening, next to the Taranaki Hardware, when he will play allcomers simultaneously. All winning a game will be presented with half a sovereign. The prizes for the art union (Royal Blue and White) are on view in Mr A. Moon’s window, and make a splendid show. They comprise five oil paintings, one of which is the work of the well-known artist, Mr Kirkwood, while the other four are by Mrs Moon. It is not generally known that ini Mrs Moon Stratford possesses an artist of whom any town might be proud.
