FOOTBALL.
SOME INTERESTING REMINiS- • CENCES. ■*» Mr I. Hyams, the well-known athletic enthusiast, has compiled a complete record covering the football games played between New Zealand and provincial teams and overseas combinations, and the. following extracts are taken from the. Wellington Post. They refer to Taranaki representatives who took part in many of the memorable contests, and should prove very interesting to both the older and present generations. The first year the Taranaki men figure in the records was 1893, when A. Bayly, A. Good and J. Lambie went over to Australia with the New Zealand team. New South Wales returned the visit the following year, when A. Bayly, H., Good, W. Bayly, J. Lambie, T). Hughes and A. Humphries Were included from Taranaki. In the 1897 team which toured Australia A. Bayly (captain), H. Mills, L. Allen "and A. Humphries went from this province. . Nat .till 1899 did New South Wales return the visit, and that year Taranaki supplied three representatives, L. Allen, A. Humphries and B. O.Dowda. A. Humphries was our sole representative in the 1903 team which went to Austraila. In 1901 the event was the test game against Bedell-Sivright's British team, which W» S. Glenn gained a place from Taranaki. The following year J. Hunter, .H. J. Mynott, I*. Glasgow, W. S. Glenn and J. O'Sullivan went with the colonial team to the Commonwealth, and these Taranakiarm, with ,the addition of H., Abbott, went with the famous "All Blacks" on their memorable world tour. No one from this province was included in the New Zealand team against Australia here in that year, while in 1907 J. Hunter (captain), H. J. Mynott, J. Colman and J. O'Sullivan went across the Tasman. In 1908 came A. F. Harding's team of Britishers, and J. Colman (2), D. Cameron (3), J. Hunter (3), and Glasgow (I>. earned their red-caps from Taranaki, in the number of .test matches indicated . ",...,:.
Taranaki men in Australia in 1910 were H. J. Mynott and J. Stolir, while last year, against the Australians here, our rep. men were R. Roberts and H. Dewar in the first match and C. Brown and R. Taylor in the second and third.
No mention is made of the New Zealand visit to America last year, when a quintette from Taranaki—R. Roberts, H. Dewar, J. Stohr, G. Loveridge and M. Cain—made the trip. From 1882 to 1913 the record of matches played between New Zealand and .Provincial teams against Overseas Comhinations is 196, of which 140 were Won, 47 lost, and 9 drawn. The points scored in these games were: New Zealand, 3120; Opponents 1055.
