LOCAL AND GENERAL.
In the report of tiie mid-winter examinations at the local school Inez Clayton (not Clifton) in Standard IV., was awarded 278 points.
Miss Pearce, of the Waitara Statu School staff, having accepted a position on the staff of the Stratford school, local scholars made her a presentation to-day, says yesterday's Mail. She takes up her new duties on Monday.
At a meeting of householders at Tahora the following school committee were elected for the year ending April, 1915:—Messrs William Hallett (chairman and secretary), W. Bowers, It. Kennedy, 11. Pittams. and C. McCarty. .
Butter in cold store yesterday at the ports named was as follows: Auckland 5463 boxes; Patea 1315 boxes ; Wellington. 8722 boxes; Lyttellon, 2174 boxes; Dunedin, 154.0 boxes; total, 22,644 boxes. The total at July 31, 1913, was 13..572 boxes, and the total at July 31, 1912, 27,230 boxes.
The following programme will be given by the Stratford Brass Band in Broadway this evening:—March, "Forward" ; waltz, "The Old Abbey" ; intermezzo, "In the Twilight" ; march, "Marching Home"; waltz, "Sizelletfca" ; gavotte. "Rustic Revels" ; march "Queen of the West;" cornet solo, "A Perfect Day;" "God Save the King."
Tuna correspondent writes as follows:—A public meeting was held in the local school on Tuesday night, when an emphateic protest was made against the proposal to abolish the Taranaki Education Board. It was also resolved to forward copies of the resolution to those responsible for the Bill and to the several members for Taranaki.— Last week Tuna met Denbigh Road in a cribbage match in the Oddfellows 1 Hall at Midhirst and suffered defeat by three games.—The annual examination of the local school takes place on the 6th August.
Cribbage teams representing Stratford and Denbigh Road met in Stratford last night, the home team winning by 53 games to 47. Details of the play are as follow (Stratford players being mentioned first in each case) : —Hawk and Gallagher 5, Kelly and Douglas 7; W and F. Collins 10, G. Andjgrsou and L. Lyi'ord 3; J. Yandlo and P. Speck 5, W. J. Kilpin and A. Askew 1 ; J. Jones and C. Kelly <">, F. Mills and F. Pedersen 8; W. Yardley and R. H. Kivell (9, E. C. Frost and 0. Mills I; A. Nelson and B. Green 7, W. Walker and H. Huckstep 4; G. Lowe and F. Stewart 8, and V. Askew 6; J. and L. Sharrock 5, G. Prince and J. Mills A ; C. Jackson and C. Speck 2, 0. Kcightley and 6. S. Ferguson 7. Stratford has now won two games against.Denbigh Road, but it is proposed that Stratford will pay another visit to the Head.
Mr J. Liliewall, Home Missionary, who is leaving the Toko district, will preach his farewell service there on Sunday.
At Victoria Park this morning the Stratford District High School Junior football team defeated a team
from the New Plymouth High School by 14 points to 5.
At cribbage last night the Tuna team defeated Ngaere by 48 to 39. At two tables Tuna won by 11 to '4 and 7 to 3, and at two others registered wins of 7 to 5. Ngaere's wins were 8 to 5, 7 to 5, and 7 to 6.
A large meeting of householders in the Pembroke Road school district, held last night, passed a resolution protesting against the proposed elimination of the Taranaki Education Board, and it was decided to forward a petition to this effect to the Premier and Messrs Hine, Wilkinson and Okey, M.P's.
A Feilding Press Association telegram says:—Mr E. Short, the wellknown breeder of llomney Marsh sheep, has received a communication from tiie Panama Exhibition Commission asking him to accept the position of Commissioner of Stock at the Exhibition, the management of which will be entrusted to representative men. Captain Pearse, 1 editor of the Pastoralists' Review, is acting for Australia. Mr Short accepted the offer and sails next August.
