CARNIVAL QUEEN CONTEST
Those who attended the United Friendly Societieis’ social and dance last evening in the Foresters’ Hall, to further the candidature of Miss A. Cramer (Red, White and Blue), spent a thoroughly enjoyable evening in dance, music, song and cards. The attendance was the largest that has ever assembled in this Hall. The floor was in splendid order. The music was supplied by Mr Bianchi, extras being played by Misses E. Kelly, Rogers (violin and piano), and Taylor, of Awatuna. The following contributed items during the evening: Misses Rogers, duet (piano and violin); Misses Wolfe, duet; Miss Fieldes, song (encored). Each item was loudly applauded. Accompaniments were played hy Miss A. Cramer and Miss A. Rogers. Messrs J. W. B. Jones and T. Lawson carried out the duties of M.M.’s. An excellent supper was provided.
There will be a euchre party in the Foresters’ Hall this evening, when good prizes will be given and light refreshments provided. A good attendance is expected, and Friendly Society members are asked to roll up in force.
A dance and card party will be given in the Fire Station to-night, to further the candidature of Mrs Gr. Smith (Royal Blue and White). Friends and supporters of the Sports Candidate, Miss Minnie Hignett (Black and Red), are reminded of the social and dance to be held in the Parish Hall on Friday. The above teams are playing a Ranfurly Shield match in the afternoon, and the Sports Committee are entertaininig them.
The supporters of Miss Meredith, of Strathmore (the farmers’ candidate), are working quietly but steadily. An advertisement in this issue requests the farming community to vote solidly in her interests.
The price of admission to the concert and dance (Royal Blue and 'White) at Tariki on Thursday evening wa s wrongly stated in yesterday’s advertisement, owing to an alteration which has since been made. The par should have read: Concert Is, Dance, Gentlemen Is 6d, Ladies Is.
An afternoon for ladies to further Miss Hart’s candidature will be held in the Egmont Club on Wednesday. All are cordially invited. The first application for the Band’s services was received yesterday from the secretary of the Sporting Candidate’s (Miss Hignett) Committee, requesting the attendance of the Band at their football match on'Thursdry, August 6th inst.
