THE BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.

NATIONAL SCHOOLS DEFENCE LEAGUE PASS RESOLUTION. IPbb Peesb Association.] Wanganui, July 2. A meeting of the Wanganui Branch of the National Schools Defence League passed a resolution; That the members of the National Schools defence League in Wanganui, convinced that, in the interests of public and domestic order, the present system of secular education in State schools should be upheld, hold it to be, no. business of the State to teach, religion, believing that every individual in the community has rights which, should be held inviolate. We take the view that the schoolmaster should at all times be master of the school—it is his sphere. The minister’s: sphere is his church, and he has no business in matters of the„. school as a State school, nor has the State any right to ask school teachers engaged under the secular system to teach religion. We view the action of tire Massey Government in giving way to agitators for the Bible-in-schools and compulsion of teachers as a piece of political opportunism which deserves the condemnation of the reasonable people of this Dominion, and we resolve to use all our power to oppose it.
