PERSONAL.

An old* resident of Banks Peninsula passed away on Wednesday morning in the person of Mr J. M. (“Mat”) Wight, of Balguerie street, Akaroa, Ho was born at Cowes, in the Isle of Wight, in 1834, and was brought up to a seafaring life. Embarking on a sailing craft as a young boy, he travelled in nearly every part of the globe. He was a sailor on board one of the ships which transported troops to the Crimean War, and actually witnesser the famous Balaclava charge. He and his shipmates were given permission by their captain to climb the heights close by, and watch the engagement, and he saw the far-famed charge of the Light Brigade. He was also on board one of the transports which carried troops to India at the time of the Indian Mutiny in 1857. How long he was in New Zealand is not known, but he saw the notorious “Bully” Hayes in Auckland in 1869.
