SCHOOLS ASSOCIATION.
The following resolutions were carried at the meeting of delegates held in New Plymouth on Friday:— That the Taranaki Education District should bo enlarged to include at least the whole of the provincial district of Taranaki. That a £ for £ subsidy should be granted on moneys raised by primary schools, as it was in the case of district high schools. That no teacher should be transferred just prior to an annual examination. That teachers’ salaries, especially in the case of those entering the profession, should be brought into line with those paid In other branches of the public services. That a teachers’ classification scheme sirSilar to that in other branches of the public service should be brought
into operation. ! That the board be requested to supply committees with the necessary stationery for quarterly reports to parents on the progress of pupils and instruct teachers to provide them. That corporal punishment should be inflicted in front of the class and not in any ante-room, as the presence of witnesses was advisable. That the board lay down a definite regulation as to homework, and to give more homework on Friday' night. That the medical examination should be annual and private, and that in the case of poor parents the State should provide medical treatment free or at a reduced rate. ■ That the examination for Standard 6 proficiency certificates be conducted in the school under the supervision of the head teacher. That the midwinter holidays should be extended and the midsummer holidays correspondingly curtailed. That committees should be relieved of the present charge of 10s for keeping accounts. That the time for holding householders’ meetings be 7.30 instead of 7 o’clock. That a better water serivee should be provided at country schools, i That associations of school committees be given legal status, and that members of central boards of educa-
tion be elected from members of such associations by persons whose names are op the Parliamentary roll.—Referred to the incoming executive. That the Government be requested to give more assistance to school gardens and agriculture. Subsequent to the conference a meeting of the North Taranaki Schools Association was held and the following officers elected President, Mr S. G. Smith; vice-president, Mr G. H. Dolby; secretary and treasurer, Mr G. S. Whitecommittee, Messrs W. G. Reid, Smart, Downes, and Short. The rate of subscription for committees was fixed at Id .per pupil, with a minimvnh pf bs and a maximum of £2.
