ALLEGED OPIUM SELLING.

[Per Press Association.] Christchurch, May 29,

A Chinaman named Ah Maw, alias Jo Maw, was arrested to-night by Detectives Ward and Gibson on a charge of selling opium. An opium outfit was found on the accused’s premises, also a quantity of the drug.

Arrangements have now been complete/} . for, the filling of tTTo vacancies which will be caused in the New Zealand General Staff shortly by the return to England of Colonel E. S. Heard, Chief of the General Staff and Director of Staff Duties and Military Training, and Lieutenant-Colonel R. A. Collins, D. 5.0., Adjutant-General to the forces.

In reply to! . a question put by a Post reporter to-day, General Godley, Commandant of the Forces, stated that Colonel Heard would be succeeded by Lieut.-Colonel W. G. Braithwaite as Chief of the General Staff, and Lieut.Gbibftel Collins by Colonel E. W. C. Chaytor as Adjutant-General. No anChaytor as Adjutant-General. No announcement has yet been made as to Colonel Braithwaite’s and Colonel Ohaytor’s successors, thought it is reported that the latter appointment will be conferred upon Major Johnston, who is at present in Wellington on furlough from India. BETTER WEATHER REPORTS. Wellington, May 29. Mr D. C. Bates, Government Meteorologist, is a passenger for Sydney’ by the Maunganui. He will confer with the Commonwealth Meteorologist and the wireless authorities regarding the establishment of a more complete system of weather reporting by wireless messaegs from and to ships.
