Mr A. E. Bealcher, headmaster of Christ's College, Christchurch, has resigned. The Hon. W. Fraser, Minister of Public Works, will be entertained at dinner at Eltham on Thursday, on his return from Opunake. Miss McLean, Assistant InspectorGeneral of "Hospitals, will be in charge during the temporary incapacity of Dr. Valintine. Mr O. J. Howarth, formerly schoolmaster at Kaikohe (Auckland), commenced duties yesterday as schoolmaster at Cardiff. Dr. Valintine, Inspector-General of Hospitals, is at present in the New Plymouth Hospital, where on Saturday he underwent an operation to his leg. j The.death is announced from Glasgow of Mr Robert McGill, who was many years ago an engineer in the U.S.S. Co's employ. He came out to New Zealand in the old Wanaka 38 years agoThe Hon. W. M. Hughes, president of the Australian Labor Federation, and late Attorney-General of the Commonwealth, will probably attend the Labor Unity Congress in July at Wellington. A Vienna cablegram reports the death of M. Francis Kossuth, one of the leaders of the Independence Party in the Hungarian House, who had been intimately connected with the politics .of the country for some years. Sir Joseph Ward arrived at Blenheim this morning on a five days' visit to Marlborough. The Press Association states that he will be civicly welcomed at Picton and Blenheim and will speak in the Town Hall'to-night, and in other places as time permits. Mr W. L. Reading, who is relinquishing the position of associate-edi-tor of the New Zealand Times to take over the editorship of the Lyttelton Times, was entertained by a number of leading citizens at Wellington last evening, and was presented with a purse of sovereigns. Sir Joseph Ward made the presentation, and spoke in highly apreciativo terms of the guest. Mr R. Fletcher and other speakers cordially supported Sir Joseph's eulogy of Mr Reading's qualities as a journalist and a citizen.
