The trial of dames Edward Handle, upon charges involving the theft of money from Messrs .Barlow Bros., in connection with Customs transactions, was continued before Mr Justice Denniston to-day. The charges were that at Christchurch, on April 26, 1912, he did steal £37 16s, the property of Barlow Bros; that on April 25, 1912, ho did steal £59 17s, also the property of Barlow Bros; that on December 6, 1812, he did steal the sum of £27 10s, the property of Barlow Bros. The case was unfinished when the Court adjourned. At the Supreme Court to-day Herbert Walter Mcßae Bull appeared for sentence on three charges of forgery, and was ordered to lie detained for a period not exceeding twelve months for reformative treatment. Wellington, May 22. The hearing of the claim by Mrs Lucinda Caldwell against the Fnion Steamship Company for £iooo damages for the accidental death of her husband, Thomas Caldwell, was concluded this afternoon, before his Honor Mr Justice Hocking and a jury of twelve. The accident happened on March 81 on hoard the steamer Maitai. A sling of superphosphate made up by the deceased and another member of the gang in which lie was working fell through the rope sling, and broke at the top of its hoist. Caldwell, who had left the shelter of the ’tween decks to got another sling, was struck by the hags and killed. His mate, named Bradley, was injured. The jury was unable to agree.
