A Rebel Victory.
THE CAPTURE OF TAMPSCO FURY OF THE CONSTITUTIONALISTS, [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright! [United Press Association.] Washington, May 13. The rebels encountered desperate resistance before they’ captured Tampico. Heavy firing continues around the city. It is believed that the Federals are fighting a rearguard action. The Constitutionalists hold the railroads between Tampico and Monterey. The losses are unknown. The State Department understands that the Federals evacuated Tampico, being unable to withstand the fury of the Constitutionalists’ attack.
SCENE AT LYING-IN-STATE. During the lying-in-state of the two seamen who were killed in Mexico, crowds of people filled the hall at Philadelphia, ad fought for places to view the bodies. Many women fainted, and two men wore seriously injured, one probably faetally. VILLA’S MURDEROUS THREATS'. Times and Sydney Sun Services. Mexico City, May 13. There is an exodus of priests, fearing Villa’s murderous threats. SIR EDWARD GREY’S VIEWS. London, May 14. The Standard says that Cabinet is considering a Mexican despatch. It is mderstood that Sir Edward Grey indicates a policy to minimise further bloodshed, and is not hopeful concerning the South American mediation.
BACKING HIS OPINION. PRESIDENT WILSON’S MONEY ON THE CONSTITUTIONALISTS. (Received 8.0 a.m.) Washington, May 14. President Wilson’s 'attitude concerning Mexico is still criticised and is regarded as putting all his money on ’die Constitutionalists in the hope that Huerta will fall before the mediators have finished the conference.
