PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.
ANNIVERSARY SOCIAL. The Foresters’ i|all, was crowded last night, tire being the annual social held by the Presbyterian Church. The Rev, jPattison presided over the meeting^. } The Rev. Mr Howes, who travelled from Manaia especially to attend the gathering, gave an address, and sang “The Sign of the Cross” with spirit. Messes Mackey and Irvine, whose .voices harmonised beautifully, gave ia duet (“The Sea of Glass”), the former lady also singing “Sunshine and Rain.” Mr Hawkins sang “Maid of Athens,” and displayed his versatility as an elocutionist in “Nail your Colors to the Mast” and “Yacob Strauss,” in both pieces 'displaying great feeling. Mr Thompson sang “I was a Pale Curate Thfen,” and Mr Douglas gave a good rendering of “The Star of Bethlehem.” Adjutant Tatton of the local corps of the Salvation Army gave a light but purposeful recitation Mr Ansford’s humorous recitations and songs were 1 greatly appreciated. The chairman in his remarks said he was pleased to see the fine social spirit in the congregation as exemplified by the meeting, and urged the necessity for more zeal for the church. He felt no doubt that the friends of the Church would come forward in the coming year to clear it out of debt. In concluding, Mi - Pattisbn thanked the ladies for their work in arranging the musical portion of the programme and in providing a splendid supper. A very enjoyable and successful evening wafe concluded with the singing of the “National Anthem.”
