A Camp Tragedy.
TWO GUMDICGERS BURNED BODIES FOUND IN THE FIREPLACE. [Per Press Association.) Whangarei, May 14. Two men, Patrick Daley, 65, and Alfred Carr, 66, were burned to death in a whare in the Puwera gum-digging camp, near Whangarei ' yesterday. Daley was seen qlive at daylight, when he made a call at an adjoining whare for matches. The diggers, following their usual custom, were away from camp all day, and on their return one of their number made a shocking discovery. Both deceased were lying in the open fireplace, their bodies being badly charred. A large quantity of liquor was found on the premises. It is surmised that both men, who lived together, had a drinking bout, and while intoxicated fell off the form, which was found in front of the fireplace. There were no signs of any struggle.
