In the Budget debate, Mr Lloyd George, replying to criticism, announced a reduction of twopence on unearned incomes under £SOO. He twit-' ted the Opposition with blaming him for carrying out Disraeli's maxim, uttered in 1872, that "the first duty to a Minister was to look after the people's health.V The Chancellor of the Exchequer added: "The rich and opulent ought to be glad to pay income and super taxes, if only as a cheap price to buy off a social revolution." The Budget resolutions were carried.
