A cable on May 7, from St. Petersburg, said: "An uproar occurred in the Duma owing to Opposition groups protesting against the intended prosecution of one Tcheidze for propagajting Republican ideas from the rostrum. On the motion of the President (M.Boremykin), fifteen Socialists were suspended for a fortnight, singly and in batches. Circassian Princes and working men were removed by the Sergeant-at-Arms, assisted by Guards, before a full House and a crowded gallery.
