The Rival Leaders.
MEXICO AND MEDIATION. SETTLEMENT STILL HOPED FOR. (By Eleotbio Telegraph—Copybight] Times and Sydney Sun Sebvioes. (Received 8 a.m.) Washington, 3lay 8. The Mexican mediation conference has been fixed for the Niagara Falls on the 18th. A comprehensive settlement is still hoped for, despite Carranza's aloofness and Huerta's determination not to resign. The mediators' earnestness is indicated by the fact that they sent a second note to Carranza, inviting his late entry. American newspapers are pessimistic about the outcome. Huerta's increasing difficulties are regarded as the only encouraging feature, as Huerta has been threatened by his followers. Zapata and Villa may come to blows over the possession of Mexico City. The United States remains apathetic. While President Wilson is criticised for his apparent partiality for Villa, he is commended for his obvious unwillingness to precipitate in war.
