The Emperor of Austria had a bad night, with frequent ; coughing, the catarrh being still obstinate, states a cablegram from Vienna.
Commander Evans, of Antarctic fame, has authorised a denial of his reported engagement to Lady Scott, widow of Captain Scott.
The Rev. A. H. Colville, vicar of New Plymouth, is paying a visit to Stratfcrd as the guest of Mr and Mrs A. W. Budge, and will preach at Holy Trinity Church to-morrow at 11 and 7, and at Midhirst' in the afternoon.
Many royalties, ambassadors, members of the Cabinet, ■ M.P.'s. and others, including Sir George Reid, attended the memorial service to the Duke of Argyll at Westminster Abbey, states a London cablegram. The Commonwealth authorities sent a wreath.
The wedding of Mr W. G. McAdoo, Secretary of the United States Treasury, to Miss Eleanor Wilson, daughter of President Wilson, was quietly celebrated at White House yesterday, states a Times-Sydney Sun cablegram. The- bride invited the guests by telephone. The honeymoon will be spent abroad.
Mr H. P. Chinchen, of the National Bank, left by steamer last evening for Auckland, to which branch of the National Bank he has been appointed sub-accountant. On behalf of his brother office! s in Stratford the local manager presented Sir Chinchen with a travelling rug as a memento of their WArm esteem and of the very pleasant rations that had existed between them during his term of office , in Stratford—about three years. His successor, Mr P. R. Stewart, who arrived on Thursday evening, was also present at the ceremony. The Oddfellows' conference at Wanganuifelected officers as follows : Grant Master, Bro. J. Mr D. J. Gilbert, a well-known Australian journalist, has been appointed editor of a new Labor paper, "The World," which will make its first appearance in November, in Sydney. For many years Mr Gilbert was on the literary staffs of the- Sydney Telegraph" and the "Morning Herald," but for a time he gave up newspaper work to follow cominercul pursuits. It is intended that 73.009 copies of "The World" shall b<* issued daily at first, and the annual expenditure is estimated at from £120,000 to £150,000.
