It is reported that Huerta is about to resign his provisional presidency of Mexico in consideration of his safe conduct. Despatches from General Funston dealing with the situation in Vera Cruz were the subject of a lengthy conference of the War Department. It is believed that General Funston asked for instructions in view of the hostile attitude of the Mexican army near Vera Cruz.

Carranza has refused the suggestion of the mediators for a cessation of hostilities against Huerta pending the outcome of the mediation. A BISHOP CRUCIFIED, CAUSE TO FEAR OUTBREAK IN MEXICO CITY. (Received 11.25 a.m.) Washington, May 4. Mexican refugees report that Zapatistas crucified the Bishop of Chalapa when he refused the rebels tire church’s funds. Soldiers nailed him to a cross and left him to die a lingering death. The tense situation in Mexico City is giving the mediators much concern. It is believed that an outbreak may occur at any moment. The reported intention of Huerta to resign is not credited at the Capitol. Iho mediators are now endeavoring to induce Carranza to modify his attitude towards Huerta.
