UNDER CANVAS.

A STRENUOUS TIME. ~ n. i ' (“Stratford Evening Post” Special.) Takapau, May 2. All regiments are now under canvas, the total being about 6000. The first field-day manoeuvres commenced tins morning, the whole of the infantry and mounted brigades participating, the men returning at 1.30. Owing to a terrific gale, tents and marquees were levelled. Heavy rain fell last night, and one of two'tents were swimming.

A RIOT IN CAMP.

DISPERSED BY MOUNTED POLICE [Per Press Association.! Takapau Military Camp, May 3.' A regrettable but very ugly incident occurred at the divisional encampment at Takapau after dark to-night. The 'men's'tempers had been tried by the wet weather and they vented their grievances avith something like a riot. The complaints were that the men were not allowed to bring; mufti to the camp to give them a chance of changing when wet ; that the., country units will be absent seventeen days instead of thirteen)• 'according'to the regulations, and the town units eleven days instead* df mh’e ; aiid food. After haranguing in the lines, the men rushed to headquarters and assumed a threatening .attitude. The crowd took a lon| ; time in dispersing, but eventually quietened and i eturned to tlieir tents. THE CAMP. Nelson, May 2. The Tapawera camp was very suc•essful. The discipline was excellent ,tui real progress was made in all departments. The men have been quite .atisfied with the food, and all played he game. Captain Avery and Captain Thom’s arrangements worked like clockwork. All are satisfied. The veather has cleared and the work was completely carried out. Colonel Chaffey is a popular commander. General Sir lan Hamilton inspects the division ,m Monday.
