Several ships are hurrying to the rescue.. CAUGHT IN THE ICE PACK. OFF NEWFOUNDLOND COAST. Ottawa, May 2. The Newfoundland coast is blocked with ice extending for miles. Incoming liners, notably the Pomeranian, were unable to proceed beyond the barrier. The Donaldson liner Tritonia was caught in the ice pack, which is slowly forcing her ashore and her wreck is probable. Navigation south of Newfoundland is very dangerous.
CAPSIZE OF A BOAT. DROWNED. (Received 8.20 a.iru) London, May 3. Five coastguardsmen were drowned by the capsizing of a boat at Aldeburgh. A PLUCKY BOATMAN. (Received 9.20 a.in.) London, May 3 . The Coastguards were returning with | their monthly wages when the boat capsized in a gale. A boatman named Harbert displayed great pluck.' He swam ashore with F<?tty Officer Joble, who was unconscious, and both were saved. A VIOLENT SOUTHERLY. GISBORNE LIGHTER COES ASHORE. THE TELEGRAPH SUFFERS. [Pis Puis* AtwocivnoN-l Gisborne, May 4, A southerly gale, which was exceptionally violent, sprang up suddenly on Saturday evening, raising a tremendous sea in the roadstead/ where lighters were engaged working the Shaw Saville Co’s. Tokomaru.
Two lighters laden wifcji meat were towed safely to port, but a third, laden with 600 hales of wool and a quantity of furniture, broke adrift and was cast ashore on Kaiti beach, almost passing over the wreck of the Star of Canada. The crew -of five men, who had a perilous experience, were rescued at 1.30 a.m. Attempts were made at daylight to salvage the cargo, but the work was unsuccessful, and the lighter subsequently foundered and broke up. The gale cut off telegraphic communication ah day on Sunday. THE HOLMDALE’S EXPERIENCE. LIFEBOAT FOUND OH THE SEACH „ Gisborne, May 4. The steamer Holmdalo, from Greymouth, mot acyclonic gale between Castlepoint and Portland on Saturday night. The decks were continually awash, one big sea going over the bridge and flooding the cabins. 'The water also got into the engine room. Both sails carried away, and when about 30 miles south of Portland the steering gear jammed, but was soon cleared. The vessel hove-to until the morning. A lifeboat is reported to havo been washed up on the beach near Pakowhai.
