Mr Edward Marfell was elected unopposed as a member of the Taranaki Education Board for the East Ward. Dr. T. H. A. Valintine, InspectorGeneral of Hospitals, is at present in New Plymouth. Mr Robert McNab lias been adv'isojj ijy the University of New Zealand that he has had the degree of Doctor of Literature conferred on him. General J. S. Ewart, who recently resigned from the British Army Council, has been appointed Scottish Cominander-i n-Chief.
The term of the Hon. R. A. Loughnan as a member of. the Legislative Council will expire on Wednesday next. The Hons. J. Rigg and J. E.< Jenkinson are due to retire on July Ist.
Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., is in New Plymouth continuing a departmental inquiry commenced in Christchurch into certain matters connected with the Labor Department.
The death of a. resident of the Auckland Veteran’s Home, Mr Peter Gregory, formerly of the 68th Regiment, occurred on Tuesday. The deceased saw service throughout the Maori war, and gained the New Zealand war medal.
The death is announced of Daniel Mullane, a farm laborer living near Macroon, Cork, who is stated to have reached the age of 110 years. He was active up to a few" months ago.
Mr C„ E. Adams, the New Zealand Governent Astronomer, has been awarded the Martin Kellog Fellowship, entitling him to twelve months’ residence in Lich Observatory, California. He will leave for there in August.
Mr W. B. Fearon has accepted the position of manager of Mr Newton King’s Kaponga branch and has resigned the secretaryship of the Stratford A. and P. Association. At a meeting of the Executive last night it was decided to accept the resignation with great regret and to record the Association’s appreciation of the valuable work done by the secretary. Mr Fearon is well known in Stratford, where ho has resided for the past thirteen years. He was for some time on Mr King’s Stratford staff and he lias been secretary of the A. and P. Association for the past two years and a half. Mr Fearon is well known for his work for the Stratford Football Club, and he also did much for the recently-formed Motoring Club. His departure will be regretted by a largo number of Stratford friends, who, however, will extend heartiest wishes for his success in his new sphere of activity.
