BOOKMAKERS FINED.
[Per Press Association.] Palmerston N., April 27. At the Police Court to-day, two bookmakers, Jack Mougban and Thomas Torpoy, were charged with betting on licensed premises. Inspector Wilson (Wanganui) detailed Constables Farnworth (Wanganui) and Brown (New Plymouth) to try and get hots with the accused, with successful results. Farnworth sorted out, the winners, and made bets with -both accused, with successful results in some instances, the illegal transactions taking place in two local hotels. Mougban denied on ■ oath any recollection of having laid the odds with Constable Farnworth,.but admitted having been previously convicted on a similar charge. Mougban, as a second offender, was fined £SO and costs, while Torpoy, a first offender, was; fined £25 and costs.
