SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MEETING OF HOUSEHOLDERS.

There wore over thirty present at the meeting of householders hold at the school last night for the purpose of electing a committee for the ensuing year, Mr P. Skoglunci (chairman of the out-going committee) was voted to the chair. ; Speaking to the ■ motion for the adoption of the annual report Mr N. .1. King said householders could be congratulated on the excellent report | presented and on the results of* examinations. He thought the staff oi the school was |pne of the best in the Dominion, particular credit being due to the Headmaster, Mr F. Tyrer. r lhe condition of the school and the grounds reflected great credit on the committee. Mr C. D. Sole said he hoped that the recommendation for the formation of a drum and fife band would be carried out. Mr E. Jackson said no effort should he spared to have the playground enlarged. It was stated that Victoria Park was close at hand, but some parents objected to their children having to go across the road, and running the risk from passing vehicles. Mr Skoglunci said that although the balance-sheet showed a less credit balance than in the past year the committee was really in a better financial position. As regards the playground, the suggestion was to incorporate the ground on which the Headmaster’s residence stood in the playground. Certain steps had been taken in the matter and if nothing was done by the Government it would be necessary to hold an indignation meeting; but he hoped that would be unnecessary. In conclusion, Mr Skoglunci expressed his pleasure at seeing so many householders present, indicating that more interest was, being taken in school matters.

Mr J. McMillan moved that the Headmaster and the staff he complimented on the admirable results achieved by pupils of the school. Mr Cl. Smart seconded. Ho said the school’s name was known throughout the North Island. Messrs King and Sole also supported the motion, eulogising the efforts of the staff. Mr Skoglund said the school was one of the best of, its class in the country, and that was due largely to the efforts of the Headmaster and the secretary of the committee. The motion was carried. Mr Skoglund brought forward the resolution forwarded by the North Taranaki School Committees Association, asking for the enlargement of the Taranaki education district to include the whole of the proyince of Taranaki. He would move the resolution. Mr C. I). Sole seconded and the motion was carried. Mr N. J. King moved that the Minister for Education be asked to 'have the playground enlarged, the present ground being altogether inadequate for the number of children attending the school. The motion was carried. Mr King moved a rote of thanks to the out-going committee for their efforts during the year. He thought the committee had got the "best possible value for the money expended. Mr J. H, Thompson seconded and the motion was carried. On thb motion of Mr McMillan a vote of thanks was passed to the press. The election of committee resulted as follows:—?. Skoglund 32, G. Smart 31, E. Jackson 28, F. A. Cramer 27, E. W. Hancock 24, Sanderson 24. J. McMillan 23, T. Lawson 22, W. McDonald 21 (elected), F. W. Mullen 20, C. Martin 18, G. Murray 18, J. Bowen 16. At a subsequent meeting of the committee Mr Skoglund was re-elected chairman.

Mr 11. H. Kivcll was re-appointed caretaker and Mr T. H. Penn secretary. OTHER SCHOOLS. The following committees were elected at other schools : Ngaere. Fourteen householders were present. Mr T, E. Coleman was voted to the chair. The chairman’s report and balance-sheet were read, showing a credit balance of £ll 4s 3d in hand. The expenditure for the year was £49 9s (id, and the receipts £OO 13s 9d. The report was as follows: The year’s work in connection with the school has again been a very successful one. The attendance lias been good. The year started with 105 on the roll, the average attendance for last year being 91.3. The number on the roll is now 110, with an aevrage of 109 for last quarter. We are pleased to report that the Board has granted us an extra teacher this year, which should be a benefit to the school work. The inspector’s report for the year was again a first-class one, and will bo read, anil the teachers are to lie complimented on their good work. During the year several necessary improvements to the school have been effected by the Hoard. Some of the old desks have been replaced by more up to date ones. Grates have been put in the open fireplaces .for burning coal, new lavatory basins have been [Hit in the boys’ porch and the drainage carried out to the road, and both boys’ and girls’ outhouses are to be replaced by new ones as soon as possible. The committee have all done their best to keep the grounds in good order as far as the funds at their disposal would allow, but were in a state of bankruptcy for the greater part of the year until the proceeds from-the annual concert set them on their feet again. Seeing that there will be a general election in the forthcoming year, we should work for a much more liberal scale of capitation to be paid In school coin tuitions. At present the

amount paid to this committee just pays for the cleaning of the school and washing towels, and they pay little enough for that. Out of what can be begged, borrowed or stolen the committee have to provide firing, stationery, all small repairs to school and outbuildings and keep the grounds and fences in order, besides doing any other improvements they may think desirable, and we don’t think it a fair thing to expect them to do it. 'I be amount [granted should be at least sufficient to cover the ordinary necessary expenses. We have to thank the teaichors, the Rev. Dent, and the parents for their assistance and support given to the school concert, which was a success in every way, resulting in a profit of £l3. The following comprise the newly-elected committee: —H. •lones (chairman), Mrs Truelove, I*. Tecofskey, E. H. Kenyon, Saunders; H. Taylor, A. E. Wickham (secretary).
