PERSONAL.
The Rev. E. Bandy left for his new station at Wanganui on Tuesday last and Mrs Bandy left by this morning's mail train to join him. Dr. Buck (Te Rangihiroa), M.P., has definitely announced that he will not again stand for the Northern Maori seat. A movement is on foot with a view to inducing him. to become a candidate for the Bay of Islands (European) electorate. Queen Augustine, as the English society papers persist in calling her, despite King George's mandate that she shall be known as "Donna Augusta," accompanied by King Manoel. declared open the Dickens fete at Ealing last month, thus making her first public appearance in England. She spoke in admirable English, and received a bouquet of' orchids from the hands of a little great-great-grand-daughter of the celebrated author. The funds are for the Hospital for Crippled Children/ of Alton.
Captain P. Hall Thompson, who has been appointed naval adviser to the New Zealand Government and will command H.M.S. Philomel when the warship is recommissioned in July, joined the training ship Britannia in July, 1887, and two years later went to sea as sub-lieutenant. In that capacity he gained five first-class.cer-tificates, and was specially promoted to lieutenant in 1894. In 1895 he was promoted to commander, and has since been employed in tho Naval Intelligence Department of tho Admiralty. He received the rank of captain on Juno 30th, 1913.
