THE NAVY QUESTION.
OPINION IN CANADA. [Br Electric Telegraph—Copyright} [United Press Association.) Ottawa, April 16. Debating the Budget, Mr Leinieux, a niember of the Laurier Cabinet, referred to the navy question. He said it "was gratifying to know that Sir Wilfrid Laurier's position at the Imperial Conference in 1911 was the position to which the Australian Government adhered to-day. He quoted Mr Millen, Federal Minister of Defence, in proof of his statement. Mr Lemieux demanded to know why the Conservatives, whose loud protestations of loyalty were heard every where, refused to increase the British preference when requested by the the wheat-growing provinces. London, April 15. Canadian nwspaper correspondents, commenting on the Australasian navy utterances, state that there is no evidence that Canada is ready for a naval conference. The Government is not disposed to develop a permanent policy until it fulfils its promise to give Britain three Dreadnoughts.
