Mr Robert Carson, aged 76, died suddenly at Hillgrove last evening, states a Dunedin P.A. message. Brigadier-General Bridges has been appointed Director-General of tbe Australian forces', states a Melbourne cablegram. The Rev. O. W. Howard, of Waimate North, has been appointed Vicar of Stratford, and is expected to commence his duties in the second week in May. Archdeacon Evans will take charge of the parish until the newlyappointed vicar arrives. Mr N. J. King announces through our: advertising columns his pleasure in acceding to the request of the recent requisition to allow himself to be nominated for the mayoral election. An address on municipal matters will be given, by Mr King in the Town Hall,,on Friday evening next. Ramsden,.sole landlord of the "town* of Huddersfield, is dead (states a,London cablegram.) He made over the estate to his son four years' ago! His death recalls, the seven years' legal war between him and his tenants, eventually leading to legislation in 1867 defining the refationa ofi iand- * lord and tenant.
