INTERVIEW IN SYDNEY. [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] (United Tress Association.j (Received 10.25 a.m.) Sydey, April 14. Sir Joseph Ward arrived by the Maunganui. Discussing the Pacific cable, he declared it was never intended that the scheme should end with laying the cable to the Canadian shore, but should extend across the Atlantic. It was a matter for regret that the scheme had not been carried to its conclusion. As regards naval matters, while disclaiming any desire to obtrude himsolf as a controversialist in tho Australian policy, Sir Joseph said he adhered to the opinion that the best course was to contribute to the British Navy.
