ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES.
MAN KILLED BY A TRAIN. [Pke Press .Association.] Christchurch, April 10. A shocking fatality occurred in the early hours of this morning, Timothy O’Connor, a laborer, residing at Islington, losing his life through being run over by a railway engine. The fatality occurred shortly after 1 a.m., about half a mile south of the Islington railway station. The driver of- the midnight : goods train from Christchurch to Ashburton, shortly after leaving Islington, noticed a man lying across the rails. Ho immediately applied the’emergency brakes, but unfortunately the train happened to be a very heavy one, ano ho could not pull up in .time. The result was that the unfortunate man was dragged some forty yards under the engine, and his body was terribly mangled. Death must have been instantaneous. O’Connor was a single man, and was well known in Islington.
KILLED AT STON E-CRUSH INC. Whangqrei, Aoril 11. A young man named Ashley Crawford, aged 23, son of a settlor in the Maungakaramea district, was fatally injured while working at a stonecrusher at Moewhare on Thursday afternoon. Deceased was found lying on the ground in a dying condition with terrible injuries to his head. It : s surmised that he was caught in the belting of the crusher and dragged into the machinery, ACCIDENT ON A STEAMER. Christchurch, April TO. As a collapsible boat was being lowered from the Wahine this morning, the block and tackle carried away through the valve of the winch blowing out. An able seaman named Tate was struck by the falling gear. He sustained a badly crushed thigh and had his thumb nail torn off. SUDDEN DEATH. Dunedin, April 10. A woman named Mary Hanley, who was employed intermittently as laundress at Ashburn Hall, was found dead on the road about half-a-mile from the institution yesterday afternoon. She was working as usual yesterday, but another employee who went along the road shortly after she left found her lying dead. Death is believed to have been due to natural causes. THAMES RIVER FATA LIT. Thames, April 11. The body of Charles Bush, fisherman, who was drowned in the Thames River yesterday, was found near where the fatality occurred. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Christchurch, April 11. Mrs Trizzel, 71 years of age, wife of a retired farmer at Rungiora, attempted to commit suicide early this morning by cutting her throat.
