The death is reported of the Dow-ager-Empress of Japan. Tho operation on the King of Sweden was successful, states tho cables. Sir Joseph March left Wellington on Thursday night by the Maunganui for Sydney. He returns in about ten days’ time. The death of Mr A. E. Muir, a veteran journalist, aged 70, is repoited from,Gisborne. The deceased was born in Wellington, and was connected from his earliest years with The Independent, of which his father was part proprietor. He arrived in Gisboine in 1883, to assume the proprietorship of the Poverty Bay Herald. Mr Joseph van Maclarasz, a Hungarian who has entered his 101st year, is the oldest Parliamentarian in the world. “Uncle Joseph,” as he is famililarly called, was elected a deputy of the Presburg Diet in 1833. Until four years ago, when he retired, the electors of his constituency have never failed to return him.
