THE FACTS OF LIFE.
MEDICAL OPINION ON TEACHING OF SEX-HYGIENE.
That children should ho instructed in sex-hygiene is emphatically the opinion of Dr. Mary Scharlieh and other women : erectors to whom the question has heen put by a lady representative of "Th© Daily News," London. , • Dr. Scharlieb was all in favour of the instruction being given by the parent. "But/' she said,- "if the mother neglects to exercise her prerogative she should not be indignant because the needful information about the origin of life is vouchsafed by a teacher whose endeavour is to safeguard her pupils from the terrible dangers which lie in wait for the young and ignorant. "Unfortunately for the children, far too many parents do not trouble about the matter at all, even on the threshold of marriage. The reason probably is that they were taught nothing, of the kind themselves. Medical women are constantly lecturing to parents on the subject." As to whether sex-hygiette should be taught in class in elementary schools, Dr. Scharlieb prefers that it should be given individually to each child, and advises that the parent should be. present. In schools where botany and physiology are taught, she pointed out, the facts of life can be easily led up to and simply explained.
