THE MAYOR ON MR NEWTON.
[To This Editor Stratford Post.J Sir,—ln reply to the last letter of Mr Walter J. Newton, I desire to say that it is useless for that gentleman to attempt to lead the people of Stratford to believe that I grossly insulted him. I rebuked him certainly, and I maintain that the rebuke/ was well merited under the circumstances. His blustering and truculent letter in which he aired his complaints was a discourtesy to me as Mayor, and on the face of it was intended to be so. If your correspondent is under the impression that he has a right to be discourteous and hold me as Mayor of the town up to contumely when he has grievances to state, he is vastly mistaken. In no case when approached in a courteous manner have I failed in an endeavor to carry out the wants of ratepayers where possible, but the methods of your correspondent I will not tolerate. The attitude of i your correspondent towards myself is somewhat on a par with the way he has approached burgesses in his house-to-house canvass in obtaining signatures for the petition favoring'a license to the Electrical Supply Company. When addressing the burgesses, it is my intention to deal with this gentleman's methods in this respect. In conclusion. I wish to state that in the coming Mayoral election, I have a duty to perform to the burgesses from which I shall not flinch, and no blust t ,from those opposed to the principles I have advocated will turn me from the course I have mapped out, and in combatipg the undercurrents chat I consider are opposed tp the rights of the burgesses, I claim the privilege to meet such in a way that, the knowledge at my disposal ' dictates, is in the true interests, of those I represent.—l am, etc.,
Mayor, W. P. KIRKWOOD,
'CHAUFFEUR'S SUGGESTION."
[To Thk Editor Stratford Post.] Sir,---Mr Newton serins to be as feckless in his guessing as lie is in his driving. Probably "Chauffeur's" suggestion is a good one. I am, etc., J. FJREDItIC.
