MIDHIRST SPORTS.

THE GATHERING YESTERDAY. Favored with delightful weather, the second annual Midhirst Settlers’ Picnic and Sports, which took place on Thursday, were in every way a gigantic success. Held in a field adjoining the ‘Midhirst Factory,' l , pleasantly situate on the main road, and kindly let for the occasion by the J directorate of the Midhirst Co-opera-jbive Factory, the ground was eminently suitable for the gathering. Not only Midhirst residents, but Stratford, Inglewood, Cardiff, Toko, Tariki, and other places were well represented. Mr J. B. Hiite, M.P., the patron, of the sports, favored the company with his presence early in the day and presented a trophy for the married men’s race. Owing to a previous engagement Mr Hine was unable to remain throughout the proceedings. Much excitement was manifest in the married women’s race, when Mrs Wright, won the coveted prize, while the wrestling on horseback after a hard fight, was well won by a member of the Territorials, G. Coleman. The officials who did so much to make the occasion a successful one were: Starter, W. Hambljyi; handicappers, J. M. Shotter' and F. Carter; judges, J. Baker and G: Ferguson; while the indefatigable secretary, Mr B. A. Weyburne, deserves special mention. The following are the results of the various races : . ; ' ■ • > ■.-

Midhirst has evidently gained a reputation for “doing things well,” and the presence of such a largo concourse of people’is sufficient inducement for the management to “go one better” next-time. Later in the evening dancing was indulged in in. the Town Hall, and there was a gbod crowd. The floor was in excellent condition.

Midhirst folk can proudly claim yesterday’s gathering as “our successful sports.” i
