Brigadier-General Gough and seventy officers resigned; General Paget, after communicating with Whitehall, informed them that the War Office' accepted Gough’s and Major Kearsley’s resignation, but the - others were liable to tjie consequences • for refusing to obey orders. Gough and Kearsley, in reply, Said ; they would stand by their brother officers on the assurance that the movement of troops was 1 merely for the protectioh of Government property, and in assisting in the maintenance .'of-order. The officers who resigned agreed to >•» go to Ulster, but declared they would .-hot* participate in hostilities. ’ Brigadier-General Gough and Colon- ■ els McKewan and Parker, in response r ,v ‘to 1 a summons; visited the War Office. There are many provisional'-resign-. ' -v ations in the infantry and artillery intended to be effective in the event ' hostilities. Mr Bouar Law raises the debate on the situation to-morrow. Exciting episodes are expected. The King has cancelled his visit to the- Earl and Countess of Derby in •• order to remain in close communica- •>' tion with Ministers.

The Chronicle states that Mr Asquith will announce at an early date in the House of Commons his willingness to hold a general election in July, provided the Opposition will cooperate in passing into law this session Plural Voting Abolition Homo Rule and Welsh Disestablishment Bills.
