There is a financial crisis in Brazil. European purse strings have been pulled tighter and money is being hoarded to an astonishing extent. The banks hold only twenty per cent of the currency in circulation. It is calculated that twenty million sterling is literally locked up in boxes. Firms are importing safes and strong boxes and are unable to meet the demand.
