AUSTRALIA V WELLINGTON TO-DAY'S MATCH. [Peb Press Association.! Wellington, March .20. The match between the Australians and Wellington commenced on the Basin Reserve to-day. Wellington won the toss and went out to bat at 12.15 p.m. The wicket was in good condition. Hay, with Howe as his partner, were the first batsmen, the former opening to Armstrong's bowling. Howe hit La vers third ball into the slips and was caught by Noble o—l—o. Baker, the incoming batsman, opened the scoring by hitting Layer's first ball for four. Hay had made 10 runs, wheu ho was clean bowled by Crawford's fifth ball (41—2—10.) Gibbs was the next batsman, but was dismissed l.b.w. to Armstrong's second ball (12--3—o). Hiddlestone was only a few minutes at the wickets, being stumped by Armstrong (58—4—124). Seventy runs were'compiled in the first hour's play, Barker hitting freely. At the luncheon adjournment, the score stood at 93, Baker being 50 (not out), and Beechey 7 (not out).
